Self-Portrait (repost)

I've posted this photo before , but it seemed a nice one to end with. I've come to the end of the material that I want to share he...

In memory of Dick Hibbert (1933-2010), I am posting selections from his art. He painted in oil, was an avid photographer, did watercolors, and sketched in pencil, ink, and charcoal.   You can send me email by addressing it to my first name at mydruthers.com. --Chris

Five Pairs of Shoes

Shoes lined up at the entrance to our house in Zushi.  Since Japanese houses have tatami mat floors, it's customary to leave your shoes at the door.

Boy's Day Carp

The Japanese celebrate Boy's Day (now Children's Day) on May 5th.  It's traditional to fly a carp flag for each boy in the family, but you can see we had one for each child.  (The smallest one is pink for a girl, an American touch.)

Three Women

This was heavily processed from a color slide.  There's also a B&W negative of the same women, from a different angle, but I like this scene better.  The slide had some color artifacts I couldn't clean up, but making it monochrome makes them barely noticeable.  The background stones are part of the exterior wall of a small castle.

Thatched roof

Thatched roof on a small outbuilding at a Japanese temple.  I've seen this style of roof decoration several times in RTH's photos, but I don't know what the significance is.

Coiled lines on a Flagpole

Coiled lines on a flagpole.  From the negatives surrounding this one, I'm guessing it was taken in New England around 1974.

Planting Rice

Planting Rice.  The overexposure is in the negative, but RTH must have liked it this way, as I've seen an enlargement on display.  Japan, sometime in the late '60s.

Persimmon Leaves (photo)

This is a photo of a persimmon tree that was in our yard in Zushi.  RTH used it as a model for his painting of autumn leaves.
