Potting plants

Flower vendor potting plants.  I'm guessing this was taken at the same bonsai flower show I've posted other photos from before.  I'm not sure where or when the show was.  JLH says it could have been from a trip they took to China in 2003 or so.  They looked at bonsai one day while wasting time waiting for the ship on their Yangtze river cruise.

This was taken in the courtyard in front of our house in Los Gatos in the early 

1960s.  RTH built the planter and the fence/screen surrounding the courtyard.  

You can see his signature cast stone wall on the right side.

Fall hillside, Japan

Japanese hillside in fall.  Most of the woods in Japan were evergreen, with a scattering of deciduous trees, so there wasn't much in the way of fall colors.  This photo was probably taken in the late '60s.

Rice planted in a Valley

Rice paddies on level ground, that's unusual.  Japan, of course, late '60s.

Himeji Castle

The family posed in front of Himeji castle.  I think that's the main castle building visible in the background on the left.

Bamboo fence

I think this is a close-up of a temple fence made of sturdy bamboo posts.  I don't understand the interspersed bundles of sticks.  They look like inverted Japanese-style brooms, but that doesn't explain anything.

Hilltop Castle

Japan has plenty of interesting castles.  I haven't done the research to figure out which one this is.  From RTH's slide collection.

Trimming an Arbor

I don't know what is being tended here.  From a collection of slides taken in Japan in the late 1960s.

Added: JLH says this was taken outside the house we lived in in Zushi from 1966 to 1968, and the trellis holds a wisteria vine.

Boy's Day Carp

The Japanese celebrate Boy's Day (now Children's Day) on May 5th.  It's traditional to fly a carp flag for each boy in the family, but you can see we had one for each child.  (The smallest one is pink for a girl, an American touch.)

Persimmon Leaves (photo)

This is a photo of a persimmon tree that was in our yard in Zushi.  RTH used it as a model for his painting of autumn leaves.

Bearded Old Man
